Hedge Planting Services

Most hedge problems trace back to species selection that didn’t suit the site or planting that wasn’t done correctly from the start. Our hedge planting service addresses both – right species, right soil preparation, right spacing – before a single plant goes in the ground.

Hedge Planting Without the Gaps, Browns, or Lean-Outs

A hedge that never quite fills in, browns out in patches, or leans out of line within a season or two usually traces back to one of three things – the wrong species for the site conditions, planting depth that was off, and soil that wasn’t prepared before the plants went in. None of those outcomes is inevitable when the installation is handled correctly from the start.

Allison Bros provides hedge planting service that addresses all three before a single plant arrives on site. As a family-owned company with over 20 years of garden and planting a hedge experience, we assess the site, match the species to the conditions, prepare the soil correctly, and space every plant for the screening height and density the property needs.

Every hedge planting project we complete comes with clear guidance, so every plant gets the watering, care, and attention it needs through the first season to root properly and grow evenly.

  • Species selection matched to site conditions and soil preparation
  • Planting hole preparation and spacing layouts positions for the intended screening density
  • Backfill, firming, and initial watering to eliminate air pockets in the root zone
  • Planting emerald cedar hedge for a broader boundary or privacy
  • Backyard garden design for a full garden redesign

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What month is best to plant hedges?

In Ontario, most homeowners plant hedges in spring or early fall. The weather is generally milder during these months, and plants have a better chance to settle in before facing extreme summer heat or winter frost. That’s why we schedule our hedge planting service around these seasons.

Is October too late to plant?

Not in Ontario, early to mid-October is still a viable planting window if the ground isn’t yet frozen and consistent watering can be maintained until freeze-up. Hedge planting in October works when care is followed through.

How do you plant emerald cedars?

Dig the hole twice the width of the root ball and to the same depth, not deeper. Loosen any circling roots, backfill firmly to eliminate air pockets, mulch around the base, and water consistently for the first season. Spacing depends on the screening goal – 2 feet apart for a dense hedge, up to 3 feet for a screen that fills in over time. Done correctly, planting a hedge of emerald cedars delivers year-round privacy that holds its structure for decades.

What is the best low maintenance hedge?

For most Ontario properties, Eastern White Cedar is the answer. It grows dense enough to screen properly, handles the cold without issue, tolerates most soil types, and only needs trimming once a year to stay in shape. Low maintenance in practice, not just on paper.

What to plant instead of a hedge?

Fencing is great for immediate privacy with ornamental grasses for a softer boundary that doesn’t require shearing. You can also opt for mixed shrub borders for visual appeal. Each alternative has trade-offs – none provide the year-round density, noise reduction, and natural windbreak value that a properly planted hedge delivers over time.
